Lenovo IdeaTab A2109 gets official outing at IFA 2012: 9-inch 1280 x 800 display, Tegra 3, Android 4.0 (hands-on video)

Lenovo IdeaTab A2109 gets official outing at IFA 2012 9inch 1280 x 800 display, Tegra 3, Android 40 handson video

Lenovo hasn't taken much care to enshroud its trio of newly announced Android slates in any kind of secrecy. The tabs have been teased on the company's site for some time, but that's not holding the Chinese outfit back from making an official announcement at IFA 2012. Taking a slight step down in size from the S2110, the 9-inch IdeaTab A2109 ups the internal ante of its more premium stablemate with a 1.2GHz quad-core Tegra 3 buffered by 1GB DDR3 RAM, while also packing in a 1280 x 800 LED display, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing / 3-megapixel rear cameras, SRS sound, ports for a 3.5mm headphone jack, micro-USB and micro-HDMI. And for users more accustomed to quality builds, the slate shouldn't disappointed as its rear encasement is of the all aluminum variety and lending to its 1.3 pounds (570g) of bulk. Storage for this Android 4.0 slate is not as robust as its larger counterpart, but the 16GB allotted is expandable via microSD. The tab's already available online and at BestBuy, so if you want to call this your own, prepare to part with $299.

NASA discovers first two-planet system orbiting twin suns

It's been almost a year ago since we made our first discovery of an exoplanet orbiting two suns, prompting everyone to compare it to the planet Tattooine in the "Star Wars" universe. A handful of other planets orbiting two stars have been found since then, but the Kepler-47 system is special: It's the first twin star system discovered that has not one but two planets in orbit.

This unusual system was discovered using data from the Kepler telescope that's responsible for numerous exoplanet finds. According to Kepler mission principal investigator William Borucki, "Unlike our sun, many stars are part of multiple-star systems where two or more stars orbit one another. The question always has been ? do they have planets and planetary systems? This Kepler discovery proves that they do."

The first star in the system is comparable to our sun in size, although only 84% as bright. The other is a dim star, measuring a third of the sun's size and only 1% as bright. Kepler-47b, one of the two planets that most probably has a blazing hot atmosphere due to its proximity to the stars, completes its orbit within 50 days. With a radius three times larger than Earth's, it's currently the smallest planet known to orbit two stars.

The other planet, called Kepler-47c, is located much farther away and completes its orbit around the stars in 303 days. But even though it's located in the system's?habitable zone, it's unlikely to support life?? the planet is a gas giant that's slightly larger than Neptune.

Kepler-47's discovery means exoplanet hunters now have to pay special attention to clusters of stars that may be hiding more than one planet. As Borucki said: "In our search for habitable planets, we have found more opportunities for life to exist."

Pakistani officials confirm death of key militant

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Pakistani intelligence officials confirmed Thursday that a U.S. drone strike last week near the Afghan border killed the son of the founder of the powerful Haqqani militant network, a major blow to one of the most feared groups fighting American troops in Afghanistan.

Badruddin Haqqani, who has been described as the organization's day-to-day operations commander, was killed on Aug. 24 in one of three strikes that hit militant hideouts in the Shawal Valley in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal area, said two senior intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

The presence of the mostly Afghan Haqqani network in North Waziristan has been a major source of friction between Pakistan and the U.S. The Obama administration has repeatedly demanded Pakistan prevent the group from using its territory to launch attacks in Afghanistan, but Islamabad has refused ? a stance many analysts believe is driven by the country's strong historical ties to the Haqqani network's founder, Jalaluddin Haqqani.

The Pakistani intelligence officials didn't specify which strike on Aug. 24 killed Badruddin, but said he was leaving a hideout when the U.S. missiles hit. The confirmation of his death came from their sources within the Taliban, which is allied with the Haqqani network, and agents on the ground, they said. But neither the officials nor their sources have actually seen Badruddin's body.

Pakistani intelligence officials previously said they were 90 percent sure Badruddin was killed in a drone strike in a different part of North Waziristan on Aug. 21. It's unclear what caused the discrepancy.

Afghanistan's intelligence agency said several days ago that its operatives had confirmed Badruddin's death. A senior Taliban commander has also confirmed the militant's death.

A Taliban spokesman in Afghanistan, Zabiullah Mujahid, has however rejected reports of Badruddin's death, calling them "propaganda of the enemy."

The U.S. does not often comment publicly on the covert CIA drone program in Pakistan and has not said whether Badruddin was killed.

The areas where the American drone strikes generally occur are extremely remote and dangerous, making it difficult to verify a particular person's death.

Badruddin is considered a vital part of the Haqqani structure.

The U.S. State Department has designated Badruddin, along with his father and brothers ? Nasiruddin and Sirajuddin ? as terrorists. The State Department said in May 2011 that Badruddin sits on the Miram Shah Shura, a group that controls all Haqqani network activities and coordinates attacks in southeastern Afghanistan.

Badruddin is also believed to have been responsible for the 2008 kidnapping of New York Times reporter David Rohde, the department said.

After their father effectively retired in 2005, Badruddin and his brother Sirajuddin expanded the network into kidnapping and extortion, both highly profitable for the organization, according to a recent report by the West Point, N.Y.-based Combating Terrorism Center. Afghan intelligence authorities have released intercepts of Badruddin orchestrating an attack against the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul in 2011, the CTC said.

The U.S. has long viewed the Haqqani network as one of the biggest threats to U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan as well as the country's long term stability.

The Pakistani military has refused to target the Haqqani network, saying its troops are stretched too thin fighting militants at war with the state in other parts of the tribal region. But many analysts believe the military views the group as an important potential ally in Afghanistan after foreign forces withdraw.

Also on Thursday, Pakistan security officials arrested the founder of one of the country's most virulently anti-Shiite militant groups, Laskhar-e-Jangvi, for allegedly making a speech that spread sectarian hatred.

A police official in Lahore, Maroof Afzal, said police arrested Malik Ishaq as he returned from a religious pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. He was arrested because of a speech he made during Ramadan that authorities said incited sectarian hatred.

Laskhar-e-Jangvi allies itself with al-Qaida and the Taliban. The group is blamed for scores of attacks on Shiites, regarded as infidels, and on Pakistani and U.S. interests. Police arrested Ishaq in 1997, and he was accused in more than 200 criminal cases including the killing of 70 Shiites. But the prosecution could never prove the case, in part because of witness and judge intimidation, and he went free in 2011.

The arrest comes as the country is undergoing a surge of sectarian attacks, many by Sunni Muslims who view Shiites as infidels. Much of the violence has come in Pakistan's southwestern Baluchistan province.

Gunmen shot to death a Shiite Muslim judge along with his bodyguard and driver Thursday in Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan, said senior police official Wazir Khan Nasir. The police suspect it was a sectarian killing, he said.

Also Thursday, fighting continued for a seventh day between security forces and Taliban militants who came from Afghanistan to attack an area in northwest Pakistan, officials said. The fighting in the Bajur tribal area killed eight militants, two anti-Taliban militiamen, a soldier and a female civilian, said a local political official, Nazimeen Khan.

A total of 73 militants, 14 militiamen, 10 soldiers and 11 civilians, including six women and four kids, have been killed in the week of fighting in the Salarzai area of Bajur, said Khan.

LG's 55-inch OLED TV enters the third dimension, we slide on our glasses (hands-on video)

LG's 55inch OLED 3D TV

We first saw LG's 55-inch OLED TV at last year's CES, where it drew a fair share of oohs and ahhs at the company's press event. In May, the tentative pricing info for the European market was released, but this set's future in the US remained TBD. Fast forward to IFA 2012, and we're in front of this giant again -- but this time, it's sporting 3D. True, at 55 inches, it's no goliath compared to the 84-inch TVs we've seen this week from Sony, Toshiba and even LG, but the company claims this 55-inch model is the largest OLED HDTV available, and its carbon fiber backing and ultra-thin 4mm profile are certainly the markings of a high-end setup.

During LG's booth tour today, we had a chance to sneak a peek at the now 3D-capable set, which otherwise looks quite similar to the version we saw at CES, albeit with a bit more polish. In order to achieve a 4-millimeter profile, the set packs all of its connectivity in the base module. There's also an Invisible Connection module on order, which hooks up to the TV through a proprietary optical connector and transparent cable, should you wish to mount the display on your wall. Naturally, 3D content wasn't as sharp as its 2D counterpart, but the OLED looked great regardless. With its ultra-thin design, it's surely meant for consumers who care about aesthetics perhaps even more than image quality, but if you can stomach the €9,000 price tag, this is one fine get. Take a closer look in our gallery just below.

Harness Benefits of Outsourcing Business to the Philippines

The business of outsourcing has indeed led to great leaps in efficiencies in terms of operations. Doing so in the Philippines prompts companies to gain more profit in terms of having better productivity and minimizing labor costs without sacrificing quality of output.

Making use of offshore services from a country that is known for their fluency in English and access to college-educated staff means you get a team whose high learning curve allows for faster training and consistently efficient services.

By outsourcing, companies and corporations are able to relieve their internal staff with a lot of the peripheral stuff that entails running a successful enterprise. This leaves more freedom and opportunity to focus on other important aspect of a business such as corporate communications, strategic planning and marketing, which all lend itself to the success of a business.

In the Philippines, this industry has grown significantly, establishing it one of the leading offshoring destinations by 2011 and earning the distinction of having the highest number of call center employees, with nearly half a million to date. An unprecedented growth of almost 50% should definitely lend credibility to the kind of potential that this industry has. Credit it to relatively lower costs in terms of labour and operations versus other countries. The country?s familiarity with American culture and fluency in English, both formal and informal and the steady stream of college-level applicants who have studied in schools where English was the primary mode of instruction.

The industry in itself straddles several industries, allowing applicants diversity as well and providing foreign investors to tap into their potential. Whether its customer service, medical transcription, writing, engineering, finance, logstics, software development, animation, web design or accounting, there is an opportunity waiting within this highly lucrative industry.

The steady growth of the Philippines as a regional or even globally recognized hub for offshore operations provides all these services at a fraction of what one might have to pay in the U.S. or UK, given the differences in value of foreign currencies.

'Superhuman' Paralympians burst onto world stage

By Jamieson Lesko, NBC News

LONDON -- A battlefield explosion sends troops flying, a speeding car flips over on a highway, a?"Murderball" player is knocked right out of his wheelchair, all set to?a?fierce Public Enemy soundtrack.?

"Forget everything you thought you knew about strength. Forget everything you thought you knew about humans. It's time to do battle. Meet the Superhumans."

That?s how British TV viewers are being introduced to this year?s Paralympic athletes by Channel 4, which is broadcasting the London 2012 Games. Its campaign is giving Superbowl ads a run for their money, going viral?with more than 500,000 views on YouTube alone.

The hard-hitting ad is designed to jolt the public into a state of awareness and awe of what many of?these disabled athletes have had to deal with just to stay alive, let alone compete at an elite level.?It highlights that the competitors have overcome disabilities and disasters most of us cannot begin to imagine or will ever have to face. And that was before they became world-class competitors.

The campaign also aims to combat?the impression that the Paralympics is essentially the "Olympics-lite." Among the sports the ad focuses on is wheelchair rugby -- which?is so violent that it's?been dubbed "Murderball." The sheer amount of full-force contact between players requires welders to be put on standby on the sideline to repair damaged wheelchairs.

Some of the hottest tickets at the London Paralympics are for wheelchair rugby. The sport is so violent and fierce, that it has been dubbed "Murderball". ITN's Lewis Vaughan Jones met Team Great Britain's inspirational captain.

The International Wheelchair Rugby Federation?has championed the "Meet the Superhumans" campaign and comments posted on its Vimeo page illustrate the ad's power. "Now that's what I'm talking about, 'Thank you for letting me be myself.' Public Enemy never sounded better," one fan wrote. "It's a great soundtrack for our ... lives whether we're Olympians or not."

Channel 4

This ad campaign for Channel 4's Paralympic coverage has captured the imagination of many people in Britain.

The event was founded 1948 to help rehabilitate injured British veterans returning from the Second World War, though many Americans remain unaware that it exists. (There's also a tendency to confuse it with?the Special Olympics, which is unrelated. Paralympic athletes compete despite impairments including amputations, blindness, cerebral palsy and mobility disabilities.) However, there are signs that 2012 will be its breakout year.

London-bound veterans push Paralympics back to battlefield roots

The success of the London 2012 Olympic Games has sparked a spike in public interest in Britain. Ticket sales have wildly exceeded expectations, with organizers saying 2.3 million tickets have already been sold, which is more than any other Paralympic Games in history. There's a high demand for the 200,000 remaining tickets, which will be made available in batches online.

Soccer superstar David Beckham is serving as an ambassador to the Games and Prince William and Kate Middleton are expected to attend Wednesday night's Opening Ceremony.

Ahead of the London Paralympics, L.A. Galaxy midfielder David Beckham spent a day learning blind football from Team Great Britain.

Team USA features 20 military veterans and active duty service members, including some wounded at war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Among them is U.S. Army 82nd Airborne paratrooper Centra "Ce-Ce" Mazyck, who was paralyzed when her parachute got tangled with another in 2003. Doctors said she'd never walk again but Maczyk refused to listen. And she has proved them wrong.

"I wasn't hearing it. In my heart, in my soul, I knew I could walk," Mazyck told NBC News. "To this day, I am walking."

Centra "Ce-Ce" Mazyck, who was paralyzed during a parachute jump with the 82 Airborne in November 2003, will compete in the javelin at the London Paralympics. "This is my second chance," she tells NBC News' Jamieson Lesko.

The South Carolina-based mother of one is now engaged to be married but admits shes also deeply "in love" with her javelin.

'Very fortunate'
U.S. Navy Lt. Bradley Snyder was blinded by a bomb while rushing to the aid of two fellow soldiers in Afghanistan.

His training regimen had him swimming 4,000 yards a day at his local?pool in Baltimore. He is due to compete on the one-year anniversary of his injury.?

Lt. Brad Snyder lost his sight in an IED explosion in Afghanistan last year. The Navy officer will once again represent the U.S., this time at the London 2012 Paralympics in September.

"I knew I was very fortunate to be in that hospital bed and not in a coffin in the ground,"?Snyder said. "I'm going to show people that I'm not going to let this beat me. I'm not going to let blindness build a brick wall around me. I am going to find a way forward."

South African double amputee and sprinter Oscar Pistorius, who has been nicknamed the "Blade Runner," will compete in the Paralympics after making history by running?in the 400-meter event at the Olympics.

Pistorius is likely to face tough competition from Team USA, including a 25-year-old rocket scientist Jerome Singleton?and the 22-year-old Blake Leeper.

Pistorius, a double amputee born without fibulas in his legs, has trained hard to participate in the Olympics despite having to wear prosthetic legs. NBC's Mary Carillo reports.

Pistorius, a four-time Paralympic gold medealist, will carry the flag for South Africa at Wednesday's Opening Ceremony. Coldplay will perform at the Closing Ceremony on September 9.

"I believe these Games are going to change peoples' mindsets about disabilities," Pistorius told Reuters. "In the last two to three years I've seen a shift. For many years people have shunned disability, but I don't have anything in life I'm not able to do. I don't think of my disability, I think of my ability."

Sixteen countries are competing for the first time. Among them, Haiti will make its debut with two athletes competing in track and field.

This is the story of two paralympians from Haiti - a nation which is competing in the games for the first time. It's a country where disability is stigmatized and those who are disabled are shunned. ITV's Lewis Vaughan Jones reports on two pioneers who want to overcome prejudice and fill their nation with pride.

British broadcaster Channel 4 will show 150 hours of programming and about 350 hours more online and across three temporary on-demand channel.

The International Paralympic Committee predicts that, adding together viewers on each of the 11 days of competition, the total audience figure for the London Paralympics will reach 4 billion.

Of all the events that will be showcased in the Paralympics, few are as intriguing as blind soccer. ITN's Lewis Vaughan Jones met Team Great Britain captain David Clarke who explained how it works.

It said that four years ago in Beijing, a total overall audience of around 3.8 billion in 80 countries watched the 2008 Paralympics - including a total of 1.4 billion viewings in China across 11 days, 670 million in Japan and 439 million in Germany. Calculating figures in that way means individual viewers are counted several times.

More coverage of the London?Paralympics from NBC News

The daughter of the founder of the Paralympics told NBC News that the record-breaking ticket sales and interest in the London event would have made her father "immensely proud."

Eva Loeffler said Ludwig "Poppa" Guttmann ? a neurologist who pioneered the rehabilitation of paralyzed Second World War service members at a hospital near London ? would have been "extremely pleased" at how the Games had captured the public imagination.

Lt. Brad Snyder, blinded by an IED explosion in Afghanistan, is now training for the London 2012 Paralympics.

The 79-year-old said it was "very appropriate, in a way" that so many veterans from the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts were taking part in this year's event. "Helping the military wounded was where it all began, after all," she said.

London 2012: Who were the real winners, losers?

Guttman, who fled Germany in 1933 after being persecuted by Hitler's Nazi regime, challenged medical orthodoxy at Stoke Mandeville hospital, north?west of London, by encouraging patients to play sports rather than accept their paralysis.

Peter Macdiarmid / Getty Images

The Agitos symbol of the Parlaympics has replaced the Olympic rings on London's iconic Tower Bridge.

When London hosted the Summer Olympics in 1948, he created the Stoke Mandeville Games involving just 16 competitors. In the years that followed, he built his competition into the parallel Paralympic Games.

This year's event will feature 4,200 athletes from 166 teams competing in 20 sports.

For British wheelchair tennis star Jordanne Whiley, the Paralympics isn't just about winning - she also wants to outshine her bronze-medal winning father's achievements in the event. ITN's Lewis Vaughan Jones met them both as part of his series highlighting Paralympians and their sports.

Although Guttman died in 1980, Loeffler has continued his work, becoming a key figure in disabled sport ? and has accepted an honorary role as mayor of the Paralympic Athletes' Village at the Olympic Park in East London.

'Second-class citizens': Wheelchair user's fury at Paralympics over seating

One of Guttman's dreams was that disabled athletes would ultimately compete alongside their able-bodied counterparts ? a wish that came true last month with Pistorius' historic participation at the Olympics.

"He would have regarded that as a great moment, I'm sure," Loeffler said.

Experts blow up 550-pound WWII bomb found in Munich

Police in Munich say experts successfully detonated the remains of a 550-pound bomb from the Second World War on Tuesday evening.

By Andy Eckardt, NBC News

Updated at 6:56 p.m. ET: MAINZ, Germany -- Nearly 3,000 residents were evacuated from the heart of Munich after construction workers found an undetonated, 550-pound World War II bomb.

The evacuation, which affected several blocks in the busy party district of Schwabing, was ordered by local officials as a routine security measure.

Citing the dapd news agency, The Associated Press?reported that explosives experts detonated the remains of?the?bomb on Tuesday night.?Burning debris from the controlled explosion reportedly caused?fires in several nearby buildings that had been evacuated.

On Monday night,?experts from the Munich bomb disposal squad determined that the explosives were not equipped with a ?normal mechanism,? but a chemical, delayed-action detonator.

"It is an extremely dangerous device," Roman Leitow, a Munich fire department spokesman told NBC News.

?A specialist is presently trying to defuse the bomb with his team,? he added.

Leave immediately
Fire department officials went from door-to-door to enforce the evacuation, after fire trucks had passed through the streets, instructing residents with loudspeaker announcements to leave their homes immediately.

Diethard Posorski, of the bomb disposal team, stands next to an unexploded WW II bomb which was found at a construction site in Munich, Germany, Monday.

Experts from Munich fire department spent most of?Monday night shielding the bomb with sand, bales of straw and other insulating material, which would catch shrapnel and muffle the shock wave in case of an uncontrolled explosion.

Most of the evacuated residents spent the night with friends and family, but about 600 were brought to one of the three temporary shelters set up by in nearby schools by rescue teams. Red Cross workers handed out blankets and drinks.

Massive WWII bomb successfully defused

During World War II, Allied forces dropped nearly 2 million tons of bombs on Germany and experts estimate that between 5 to 15 percent of the bombs did not explode.

Authentic Vegetarian Recipes | Indian Traditional Food | Step-by ...

There are several paneer recipes on my blog. ?I am always trying out new variations of mutter paneer and often the taste is guided by the taste of my children. ?This recipe was made at the request of my son and he wanted me to use plenty of double cream in the dish. Using home made paneer made this dish taste great.

Ingredients (serves 4):

4 cups Home made paneer :(or store bought paneer try and look for ?softer version of paneer) I cup green peas (fresh or frozen)

1 cup natural yoghurt?

2-3 cloves of freshly minced garlic?

2-3 green chillies cut finely

1 teaspoon of mustard seeds

half teaspoon turmeric powder ? cup ?cashewnuts, powdered Small bunch of chopped coriander leaves ? cup sunflower oil or similar

2 tablespoons lemon juice

2 teaspoons sugar or sugar substitute

1. Cut the paneer into half inch ?strips and then cubes

2. ?Mix 2-3 teaspoons of the paneer tikka masala to the yogurt and pour it on the paneer cubes. ?Mix well. ?If using home made paneer, be gentle as you don't want the cubes to start breaking. ?Allow this mixture to marinate at least 30 minutes.
3. ?Cover a baking tray with aluminium foil, brush ?some oil on the foil and arrange the cubes on the tray. ?Allow for some gap between the cubes. If you have any of the marinade left over, save it to add to the curry.
4. ?Cook these in the oven ?at 160 degrees Centigrade (Gas mark 3 or 325 F) ?for 15 minutes. ?If the paneer?hasn't?browned a bit at the sides, give it a couple of minutes more.
?5. Allow the paneer cubes to cool.

6.?Prepare?the sauce. ?Heat 2 tablespoons of oil and add the mustard seeds to the oil. Once the mustard seeds stop popping, add the pasatta and stir. ?Add in the blended ginger, garlic and chillies; the salt, lemon and sugar. ?Also add in the peas ?and allow to cook for 5-6 minutes - giving you time to remove the paneer cubes from the tray.

?7. ?Add the paneer cubes to the curry. ?Also add in any left over marinade sauce mixture at this stage. ?Allow the mixture to simmer gently.
8. ?Add the powdered cashews to the curry and stir.

9. Once the sauce looks nice and thick, add in the double cream slowly , stirring in between.

10. ?Allow the curry to simmer on a low heat until the sauce is nice and thick.

Will Apple's smaller tablet be called the 'iPad Mini'?

7 hrs.

iPad Mini? iPad Nano? iPad Air??We don't actually know if Apple is even working on a smaller iPad. All we have to go on are?reports from anonymous sources and leaked parts?which are?allegedly?intended for this tablet. But that won't stop rumors about the devices's name from floating around.

CNET's Lance Whitney points out?that?the folks at Japanese blog Macotakara?? who've had a mixed track record when it comes to Apple rumors???say they've got a source who claims that the rumored tablet will be called?the "iPad Mini."

Apple blogger John Gruber has previously dubbed the device the "iPad Air" in passing, while suggesting that it will be announced in October, instead of sharing the spotlight with the next-generation iPhone in September.

"I don?t think Apple would want reviews of both a new iPhone and new-size iPad appearing at the same time," Gruber?writes. "The iPhone is too big, too cool, and garners too much attention ? and it?s in Apple?s interest to keep that attention undiluted."?

AllThingsD's John Paczkowski went with the label "so-called 'iPad Mini'" while explaining that he has "several sources" who confirm that Apple will indeed show off the device in October.?

For what it's worth, we frequently reach out to the folks at Apple and ask them if they're feeling crazy enough to?chit-chat about their upcoming products, but as it's their policy not to address such rumors, we'll have to?keep speculating until Apple sends out invitations to a very special event.?

Dev Sex Tape Reportedly Being Shopped

Singer Dev made a sex tape apparently. According to TMZ, the video shows the "Dancing in the Dark" singer doing the horizontal mambo night vision style.

The Dev sex tape was shot last year with an ex-boyfriend and is being shopped to the highest bidder by a third party. It's unclear how the tape was acquired.

Ooh LA LA!

Dev Photo

According to TMZ, which luckily (or unluckily) seems to get a screening of these videos, it's fairly vanilla as far as sex tapes go. Conventional boning.

Dev (real name Devin Tailes) is clearly recognizable based on her tattoos - a diamond on her front left shoulder and two sparrows on her lower back.

No word yet on whether there's been any interest in seeing Dev - also the female voice in Far East Movement's "Like a G6" - fornicate on film.

Megan Lochte Goes on Racist Rant Against Asians

In London this month, Ryan Lochte made serious waves in the pool. And he may do so again as ABC's next Bachelor.

But the star athlete's sister made waves of a very different kind during an interview on a Maryland radio station this week, dropping racial epithet after racial epithet against the Chinese.

"China was chinked out," she said on a show titled Closing Time. "Everything. Chinks. There was only chinks everywhere... You know how stereotypically they always want to take pictures, they take pictures of everything -- chink chink ... is that where it comes from?"

The host tried to jump in and suggested Megan change her word choice, but this only served to inspire more ridicule.

"'Chink'?" Megan asked. "But like it fits them 'cause they're like 'chink' [pantomines]."

Lochte concluded the rant by lumping Japanese and Chinese citizen together, saying: "They're whatever we want them to be, they're Asian."

Does that mean Megan Lochte can be whatever we want her to be? Have at it, readers!

Scientists identify new gene that influences survival in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? A team of scientists, including faculty at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS), have discovered a gene that influences survival time in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease). The study, published August 26 in Nature Medicine, describes how the loss of activity of a receptor called EphA4 substantially extends the lifespan of people with the disease. When coupled with a UMMS study published last month in Nature identifying a new ALS gene (profilin-1) that also works in conjunction with EphA4, these findings point to a new molecular pathway in neurons that is directly related to ALS susceptibility and severity.

"Taken together, these findings are particularly exciting because they suggest that suppression of EphA4 may be a new way to treat ALS," said Robert Brown, MD, DPhil, a co-author on the study and chair of neurology at UMass Medical School.

ALS is a progressive, neurodegenerative disorder affecting the motor neurons in the central nervous system. As motor neurons die, the brain's ability to send signals to the body's muscles is compromised. This leads to loss of voluntary muscle movement, paralysis and eventually respiratory failure. The cause of most cases of ALS is not known. Approximately 10 percent of cases are inherited. Though investigators at UMMS and elsewhere have identified several genes shown to cause inherited or familial ALS, almost 50 percent of these cases have an unknown genetic cause. There are no significant treatments for the disease.

Wim Robberecht, MD, PhD, lead investigator of the Nature Medicine study and a researcher at the University of Leuven in Belgium and the Vesalius Research Center, screened for genes in zebrafish that blunt the adverse effect of the ALS mutant gene SOD1. Through this process, his team identified EphA4 as an ALS modifier. Dr. Robberecht's team went on to show that when this gene is inactivated in mice with ALS, the mice live longer.

Dr. Robberecht then turned to UMass Medical School to confirm that turning off EphA4 in human ALS cells would slow the progression of the disease. Dr. Brown and his team identified two human ALS cases with mutations in the EphA4 gene which, like the zebrafish and the mice, had unusually long survival times. This suggests that blocking EphA4 in patients with ALS may be a potential therapeutic target in the future.

In an exciting, related development, a new ALS gene (profilin-1) identified last month by UMMS scientists works in conjunction with EphA4 in neurons to control outgrowth of motor nerve terminals. In effect, gene variants at both the top and the bottom of the same signaling pathway are shown to effect ALS progression. Together these discoveries highlight a new molecular pathway in neurons that is directly related to ALS susceptibility and severity and suggests that other components of the pathway may be implicated in ALS.

"It is exciting that these two studies identify the same pathway in ALS," said John Landers, PhD, associate professor of neurology and lead author of the PFN1 study. "Hopefully this discovery will accelerate efforts to finding a treatment for ALS."

Time to open the gates for high school football

Richwoods has a new entrance to Endress Field located near the northwest corner of the school. The new entrance to Richwoods Stadium, complete with an arch and iron gates, is the cumulination of several years of fund-raising through the Buy a Block campaign and the school?s 12th-man club. It?s time to turn on the lights for some Friday night football. Here?s a look at what to expect as high schools open the 2012 football season.

MONMOUHT-ROSEVILLE: TWO PAIRS

The Monmouth-Roseville football team will be sporting new jerseys and helmets this year. Previously, M-R only wore silver pants, but when they ordered new Nike silver pants this season they also added navy pants to give the Titans options for Friday nights. The team has also painted their helmets, from a metallic Navy to a flat Navy, a color that has become more popular the last few season on the collegiate level.

CANTON: NEW LIGHTS

Things are certainly brighter in Canton, where Fahnestock Field this season has new lights.

?The first time they turned them on we thought we were on the sun,? Little Giants coach Justin Miller said.

School athletics director Jon Grzanich said the new lights were part of a life/health safety upgrade at Canton.

EL PASO-GRIDLEY: OFF THE GRID

The lights will be on at the high school football field in Gridley for the first time in eight years Friday night.

Electrical issues with the lights at El Paso, which has been the host of the Titans since the consolidation in 2004, has forced the team to make the seven-mile jaunt to Gridley this season for home games.

?It will be pretty sweet to get the Friday Night lights back at Gridley,? EP-G coach Stephen Rigsby said. ?People over there are really excited about it and our kids are pretty excited about the fact they get to play over there.?

Rigsby is a 1993 El Paso graduate and played against assistant coach Matt Jenkins, a 1994 Gridley grad.

?He?s my defensive coordinator, so that?s been fun too,? Rigsby said of Jenkins.

Renovation plans are still on the table for the field and updated track at El Paso, but final decisions on what those plans are and how long it will take are still to be determined.

FARMINGTON: NET GAIN

Farmers senior linebacker/running back Seth Bales connected on 23 of 25 extra points last year. So coach Casey Martin was so thrilled to have a decent kicker this season that the team purchased a kicking net for the first time in his seven years as head coach at Farmington.

FIELDCREST: NEWLY KNIGHTED

Fieldcrest redesigned its logo in conjunction with its 20th anniversary of the high school?s consolidations.

Former Knights student-athlete Will Wyss, a senior graphics art student at the University of Illinois, retooled the logo and the mascot. Several were created. Some feature a slicker font for the word Fieldcrest that incorporates swords into the ?F? and the ?T? of the school name, as well as a tweaked Knight. Football helmets will have the new ?F? on them.

?It?s a tremendous package. He did a super job,? Fieldcrest A.D. Dan Wieczorek said of Wyss, whose mother is an art teacher at the school.

LEWISTOWN: BRING THE NOISE

Shouts of ?First down, Indians? or ?Tackled by a tribe of Indians? will now be heard loud and clear from long-time public address announcer John Levingston at Lewistown High School football games.

The high school and grade school booster clubs both chipped in to purchase a $5,000 upgrade to the sound system that was installed in time for the Indians to host the Prairieland Conference boys track and field meet last spring.

?It really adds to our facility,? Lewistown athletics director Greg Bennett said. ?Our old sound system was older than the football field here is. I think they brought it over from the previous football field. We always made fun that our old speakers looked like the ones from the 4077th M*A*S*H during the Korean War.?

And now 22-year head coach Darren Winkler?s pre-game ritual might even be heard at the Journal Star office.

?Winkler plays his heavy metal death music before the games and you couldn?t hear his heavy metal death music,? Bennett said. ?It just sounded like cats fighting because the speakers couldn?t handle it. We?ll continue to upgrade it and add new speakers.?

EUREKA/ROANOKE-BENSON: COLLEGE PREP

The Eureka/Roanoke-Benson co-op might get more of a taste of the ?college life? than they may have wanted this season. Because of renovations to the high school field at Eureka High, E/R-B will play its first three ?home? games at Eureka College on Saturdays.

McCollum Field, home of the Hornets, is getting a face lift. A new eight-lane track is being installed and new bleachers and a new press box are being added. The new additions are scheduled to be in place by E/R-B?s homecoming Sept. 28 against Prairie Central.

Tack on a game at Illinois State?s Hancock Stadium against Normal U-High in Week 5 and the Hornets will play four of their first five games away from the Friday Night lights.

?It?s kind of a bummer, but not a lot of surprise. We were prepared for this,? E/R-B coach Brian Johnson said. ?I played at Eureka College for a year, so that will be fun.?

Johnson said the new track will now make the football field more centered, whereas the northwest corner of one end zone used to butt up against the track. A new drainage system will also be in place.

RICHWOODS: DARK KNIGHTS

Richwoods this season has changed from its tranditional white helmets with a green stripe and logo to green helmets with a white stripe and logo. As is the case with several teams around the area, the helmet?s base color has a matte finish.

?We?re still green and white with the shield and ?R? on the helmet, so I think it?s still traditional,? Richwoods coach Roland Brown said. ?Now, if we struggle out of the blocks I?ll get some cans of white spray paint and change them back myself.?

ELMWOOD/BRIMFIELD: CHECK THE BOARD

Thanks to the booster club, the Elmwood/Brimfield football team now has a new team-colored scoreboard at Whitney Field.

The black scoreboard in Elmwood, with orange outline and orange LED lights, came with a $13,500 price tag. And it was a welcome addition for Trojans coach Todd Hollis.

?Last year?s playoff game, we couldn?t see how much time was on the clock,? Hollis said of multiple burned out or faded bulbs. ?(The new scoreboard) looks really nice.?

Elmwood A.D. Phil Johnston noted the efforts of many.

?It has been a tremendous cooperation with volunteers in the community and the school district both,? Johnson said of helpers from both Brimfield and Elmwood joining in at the end of July to get the scoreboard ready. ?They?ve been outstanding in working together and using every way possible to make this better for the kids.?

MORTON: MAKEOVER

Morton has a new scoreboard, and refurbished visiting bleachers. The home locker room also got a makeover, with wooden, open-faced cubicles to replaced the old metal lockers.

Henry Ford Biopic To Center On His Forgotten Jungle City

Ambition is a major part of the American identity. From the Revolutionary War to Manifest Destiny to the evolution of American industry, much of our current zeitgeist has been forged by inextinguishable ambition and bold men with a view toward the future. One such man was Henry Ford, best known as founder of the Ford Motor Company and frequently credited as the father of the assembly line. But few know about the man's more romantic ambition to create small town America in the thick of the Brazilian Amazon.

This is the story at the center of the Greg Grandin-penned biography Fordlandia: The Rise and Fall of Henry Ford's Forgotten Jungle City, which Variety reports River Road Entertainment is developing into a feature film. Producers Bill Pohlad and Sarah Hammer have already hired screenwriter Ben Coccio, who co-wrote Derek Cianfrance's follow-up to the controversial Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines, to adapt the heralded book, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

Like it's subject, the film itself must be ambitious as it's set in Fordlandia, a 1927 settlement twice the size of Delaware that the American industrialist set up in the Amazon to grow rubber. Fueled by his belief that workers deserved substantial wages for their work?a philosophy actually dubbed Fordism?he also attempted to include golf courses, ice-cream shops, bandstands, indoor plumbing and other American luxuries in his new colony. But despite his best efforts, culture clashes with the indigenous people and the jungle itself made it impossible for Ford to imprint his will onto the wild.

It's a fascinating and little known story that could prove topical as well as massive in scope. It'll be interesting to see how River Road chooses to develop this story, and what themes they'll pull from Ford's major misstep.

Kuwaiti kidnapped in Lebanon's Bekaa valley

Armed men kidnapped a Kuwaiti in eastern Lebanon on Saturday, a security official said, adding that the abduction did not appear to have a political motive.

The man, who lives in Lebanon, was seized from his car in the town of Howsh al-Ghanam in the Bekaa valley, the official told AFP.

"There are no signs that the kidnapping was politically motivated."

The official said there had been a number of kidnappings for ransom which are unrelated to political tensions or the conflict gripping neighbouring Syria.

Nevertheless, such incidents fuel fears of Syria-related violence spilling over into Lebanon, where a Shiite clan kidnapped around 20 Syrians last week in retaliation for the abduction of a family member by a Syrian rebel group.

Kuwait and several other Gulf states last week ordered their nationals -- who often holiday in Lebanon -- to leave the country in the face of threats, particularly against Saudis and Qataris, whose governments are staunch opponents of the Damascus regime.

Underground solution to starving rice plants

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? Scientists have pinpointed a gene that enables rice plants to produce around 20% more grain by increasing uptake of phosphorus, an important, but limited, plant nutrient.

The discovery unlocks the potential to improve the food security of rice farmers with the lowest value phosphorus-deficient land allowing them to grow more rice to add to global production, and earn more.

The gene -- called PSTOL1 which stands for Phosphorus Starvation Tolerance -- helps rice grow a larger, better root system and thereby access more phosphorus. Farmers can apply phosphorus fertilizers to increase productivity but on problem soils phosphorus is often locked in the soil and unavailable to plants.

Also, phosphorus fertilizer is often unaffordable to poor farmers. Adding to the problem is that phosphorus is a non-renewable natural resource and rock phosphate reserves -- the source of most phosphorus fertilizers -- are running out.

"For many years we have searched for genes that improve phosphorus uptake," said Dr. Sigrid Heuer, senior scientist at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and leader of the team that published the discovery in Nature.

"We've known for a long time that the traditional rice variety Kasalath from India has a set of genes that helps rice grow well in soils low in phosphorus," she added.

Kasalath's superior performance under phosphorus deficiency was initially discovered by Dr. Matthias Wissuwa from the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences. He then started collaborating with IRRI and shared the DNA information of Kasalath. The current research was supported and facilitated by the CGIAR Generation Challenge Program.

"We have now hit the jackpot and found PSTOL1, the major gene responsible for improved phosphorus uptake and understand how it works," Heuer said.

According to Dr. Wricha Tyagi at the School of Crop Improvement at the Central Agricultural University in the Indian state of Meghalaya, knowledge of the exact gene will be critical for future breeding programs suited to Eastern and North-Eastern -- parts of India where rice productivity is less than 40% of the national average due to acidic soil and poor availability of phosphorus.

The discovery of the PSTOL1 gene means that rice breeders will be able to breed new rice varieties faster and more easily, and with 100% certainty their new rice will have the gene.

Dr. Joko Prasetiyono, of the Institute for Agricultural Biotechnology and Genetic Resources Research and Development in Indonesia, is breeding rice plants with the PSTOL1 gene. The plants are not genetically modified just bred using smart modern breeding techniques.

"In field tests in Indonesia and the Philippines, rice with the PSTOL1 gene produced about 20% more grain than rice without the gene," said Heuer.

"In our pot experiments," she added, "when we use soil that is really low in phosphorus, we see yield increases of 60% and more, suggesting it will be very effective in soils low in phosphorus such as in upland rice fields that are not irrigated and where farmers are often very poor."

The PSTOL1 gene is also being tested in rice varieties for the more productive irrigated rice-growing areas and initial results show that the plants grow a better root system and have higher production too. This means it could help farmers in these areas reduce their fertilizer use and expenditure without compromising productivity.

The discovery also demonstrates the importance of conserving the genetic diversity of traditional crop varieties such as Kasalath. IRRI conserves more than 114,000 different types of rice in the International Rice Genebank.

The group of rice (the aus-type) that Kasalath is part of is also the source of the submergence tolerance gene, which IRRI has used to breed submergence-tolerant (Sub1) rice varieties that are being widely adopted across Asia.

New rice varieties with the enhanced capacity to take up phosphorus may be available within a few years to farmers.

All Classes of your Need Kitchen Appliances

The technology revolution has led to devices of all kinds which make our life easier. In general, which are more attractive are those developments devoted to leisure, especially at home, but this development technology not only translates into the homes in this area, but in the kitchen also is very present. Thus, we can find ovens, refrigerators and electric cook tops with very advanced features.

In the kitchen, where most noticed the importance of technological development is the use of smaller appliances, from the 'day to day' (mixers, juicers, cutters, fryers...). Innovations that are currently its handling is much easier and its usefulness is multiplied.

When it come to appliances that need a home, the kitchen always have a place in the conversation primarily because this is the part of the house that is considered one of the most important. It is where the members of the family spend time together to make food and beverage with which they feed. In the small houses, eating table including is in the own kitchen, making it an important place where everyone ultimately converges.

Generally, the preparation of food tends to be an enjoyable experience, and can take hours or just minutes. This time depends on whether it has a good amount of kitchen utensils. Here is where most of the mothers never fail to allocate a portion of the budget to have a useful and complete kitchen.

Of the many types of appliances that may be useful in the kitchen, the refrigerator and freezer are considered the most important. The need to go and buy the ingredients every day already there that we keep them in these devices and thus, housewives can buy food for several days and go by storing which is not consumed.

Afford to buy huge quantities of food is actually cheaper than be continually buying small portions. A refrigerator is also cone many compartments that make food storage is a much easier task. One can easily prepare cold dishes such as salads, ice creams and a plethora of cold desserts.

Dishwashers are also between the appliances they can find in the kitchen. They make the cleaning and maintenance of the kitchen to be converted into something easier and more manageable. They can occur in a variety of sizes and it is not difficult to select one that is the perfect size for the family or the number of plates.

The new models are also customizable and can be modified to conform to the sizes and shapes of the dishes that the members of the family UK. These tools also provide a more organized look to the kitchen since they are also used to store dishes. In addition, there are many brands to more conscientious buyers.

The glass-ceramic is the most commonly used and the most dynamic between all the kitchen appliances, since new models and types are available on the market very often. It is the main tool in the preparation of all types of food. The factor that makes them different from traditional kitchens is the variety and methods of heating.
