Laser-cut gingerbread house is perfect ... if you don't taste it

8 hrs.

Gingerbread houses are a much-admired and tasty holiday tradition in many parts of the world. Yet until now, no one we know of has tried to improve their design and construction?by using lasers. That's precisely what one engineer with a second-hand laser cutter and some architectural curiosity did. The result is high precision ... but you don't want to eat it.?

Johon von Konow, an engineer in Sweden, spends his days developing mobile phone concepts for Sony Ericsson and Huawei. At night, he and his wife, Maria, are always on the lookout for new things to try.

?I recently got hold of a laser engraver that we didn?t know what do with and Christmas season is coming,? he told NBC News in an email. ?It was sort of a natural consequence that this year?s gingerbread house was going to be made using a 50 (watt) big scary laser!?

The engraver was broken and destined for the trash when von Konow brought it home from work. He did some tinkering in the garage to get it working well enough for gingerbread house construction.

The von Konows decided to model their gingerbread house on their real-life summer home, so they?made a 3-D model of it. Next, they baked sheets of gingerbread, deciding that cutting soft dough with a laser before baking might distort the shape. Once out of the oven, they out the sheets and frosting guidelines under the beam.

?The combination of using a laser engraver and baking the sheets before they were cut resulted in extraordinary high precision,? von Konow said.??Even though the house is a miniature (even for a gingerbread house) the fitting of the different parts was excellent.?

The big?downsides were the smell ??which von Konow describes on his blog as "something between burned cake and burned hair" ??and the?awful taste.

"The scorched edges were the only drawback," he told NBC News. "We could have sanded the edges to get rid of the taste, but then some of the precision would be lost."

Since the couple knew they were never going to actually eat the house, they used lasagna sheets for additional stability, and hot glue for assembly.

The couple also has a CNC mill for precision cutting and could have used that for their gingerbread house instead of the laser. It probably would have tasted a lot better, "but it is more fun to play with new toys???especially when it is an awesome laser!"?von Konow told us.

Cultivating Trust Through Web Design | Webdesigntuts+

This entry is part 9 of 9 in the UX Foundations Session
? Previous

In this article we?re going to discuss trust; what it means in terms of UX, potential pitfalls and how we as designers can play an important role in influencing it. You?ll want to read this, trust me..

Trust is incredibly important on the web. It?s often the limiting factor that determines whether a user will perform a desired action or not. Purchasing from an e-commerce website, hiring someone based on their portfolio or even accepting the advice or opinion of a blog post all require trust beforehand.

Yet it is on the web that knowing whom to trust can prove most difficult, and it is therefore a scarce but highly valuable commodity.

Aspects such as competence, reliability, honesty and security can all play a part in our level of trust towards another. Of course, many of these traits can only be assessed over time with continuous interaction. Eventually, however, you have to trust someone for the first time, a judgement that can only be made using the information available. In terms of a website, how it looks and how well it performs will be factors taken in consideration during this judgement.

These days, many businesses and services exist entirely online. In such cases a person will have had no prior, real-world experience to assist them in making that decision to trust (and therefore utilize) a particular brand. A website will be the sole point of contact, the primary (or only) source of information available to determine whether they are worthy of a person?s trust; their custom, time and attention. Even if a real-world presence exists, it is very likely that a website was the first experience a person had with a brand. Once this is realized, it is easy to see how important web design is in relation to trust.

To emphasise this, the Stanford Web Credibility Project found the following:

nearly half of all consumers (or 46.1%) in the study assessed the credibility of sites based in part on the appeal of the overall visual design of a site, including layout, typography, font size and color schemes.

A professional level of design communicates that a significant amount of both time and money have been invested, which further communicates a level of commitment has been made to ensure a successful outcome and therefore a return on that investment.

On the flip-side, amateurish design, poor performance and sloppy mistakes communicate no investment, no consideration and therefore no commitment to the project or the user.

Now that we?ve established that design can influence trust, let?s take a look at some specific areas.

Personality

Trust is something that is formed between real human beings, but on the World Wide Web a website sits in the middle of that relationship. If a website is devoid of emotion or personality, a user will have a hard time identifying with the people behind it and connecting with a brand in any meaningful way. Yet personality and honesty can sometimes be deliberately stripped from design, in the fear that such things may seem unprofessional or turn some people away.

Clich? stock photography is an example of this. We?ve all seen the attractive, young, ready-to-help call centre girl and all of the impossibly happy professional people in business meetings. While such images may have been acceptable at one point, users can see right through them. They scream dishonesty and give the impression there is something to hide.

If you have an interest in the topic of personality on the web; Designing for Emotion by Aaron Walter is definitely required reading. Aaron Walter is also the lead UX Designer at MailChimp; poster child of how to successfully inject personality into design.

MailChimp is a service that is built around what can be a potentially mundane and time-consuming task; creating email newsletters. Through their fun brand, headed up by lovable mascot Freddie Von Chimpenheimer IV, they have made the process more enjoyable.

They ensure their strong personality runs throughout the site by creating a public guide for anyone that writes content for MailChimp; explaining the type of language needed for different situations and contexts. MailChimp recognizes the importance of personality and tone of voice.

Our content has power. The right tone of voice can turn someone?s confusion into trust, skepticism into optimism, boredom into curiosity. The wrong tone of voice can turn someone?s interest into annoyance, anticipation into disappointment, frustration into full-on anger

There are many ways to communicate your personality through your website; from the colors and typefaces you use to the tone of voice in your copy. Blogs and ?About? pages can be the perfect places to be a little less formal and employ a more conversational tone. Use these pages to show the actual faces and personalities of the people behind the website and don?t be afraid to have a little fun and get creative while you?re at it.

Social Proof

Social proof is a psychological concept which states that people tend to follow the lead of other people and look to others for guidance. If others have indicated something as safe, an individual will be much comfortable in trying it themselves.

Businesses are able to leverage this social proof to their advantage by highlighting favorable and complimentary opinions, reviews and testimonials or any notable achievements and awards. Others? good experiences demonstrate reliability, credibility and increase trust in the eyes of individuals.

This technique can be further enhanced by utilizing those whose opinion is highly valued; whether this is a celebrity, an expert in the field or, in the case of social media, those of your friends and family.

Social media has changed the way people do business online. Regular people are now able to, and are very much willing, to share their experiences instantly (good or bad) with all of their friends, family, followers, colleagues and acquaintances; many more people than ever before. Individual negative experiences have the potential to be incredibly damaging to businesses, which has resulted in many brands employing a strong social media presence to help mitigate such issues.

Security

You?d trust a bodyguard in a perfectly-pressed black Armani suit more than a guy in cut-off jeans and a ripped Grateful Dead t-shirt, wouldn?t you? Appearance can greatly influence perceptions, and we carry that mental model with us when sizing up a website. ? Aaron Walter, Designing for Emotion

In terms of e-commerce websites or any sites handling sensitive information, the level of security is obviously a huge concern for the user. However, while protocols such as SSL and levels of encryption are extremely important, many users do not fully understand them or are even aware of them at all. The judgement of who to trust with their information to is mostly based on their perception of the level of security.

For example, a recent study and subsequent article on the Baymard Institute website showed that users perceived some areas of the website as more secure than others because they were visually reinforced; surrounded by a border or block of color.

Recognized security seals such as TRUSTe or Symantec?s VeriSign, when displayed prominently, can also provide assurance to users and increase the credibility of a site.

These points further highlight just how important design is in a user?s willingness to trust a website. It also shows that these areas of a site that handle sensitive information are under increased scrutiny and therefore errors of any sort (design, functionality, spelling) will be amplified and more damaging than anywhere else.

Conventions

We rely on conventions in order to successfully use and navigate the Web. We expect things to behave in a certain way; clicking the site?s logo should take me back to the homepage for example. When things function as expected, we feel more comfortable; it creates confidence and a sense of familiarity ? aspects that are essential for trust.

The fact that the people who built the site didn?t care enough to make things obvious ? and easy ? can erode our confidence in the site and its publishers. ? Steve Krug, Don?t Make Me Think

On the other hand, when things don?t work as expected we are left feeling confused, frustrated and we are unlikely to place our trust in something we cannot predict. As well as adhering to conventions, the feeling of uncertainty be further helped by other methods that enahnce usability; effective error messages and good user feedback for example. Think about how much better you feel once an email confirming your purchase lands in your inbox.

While you may think that adhering to conventions will stifle your creativity as a designer, you have to remember Jakob Nielsens? Law of the Internet User Experience; ?Users spend most of their time on other sites?.

Final Thoughts

A few weeks ago, we looked at some of the Dark Patterns that are being employed in website and UI design. It was determined that while such deceptive tactics may provide a short-term benefit, consumers will eventually catch-on in the long-run and the offending businesses will often earn themselves a negative reputation.

Much of the same lessons can be applied here. While the techniques discussed above can help overcome that initial resistance that many users have, true trust can only be built over-time and backed up by your actions. To once again quote Jakob Nielsen:

trust is a long-term proposition that builds slowly as people use a site, get good results, and don?t feel let down or cheated. In other words, true trust comes from a company?s actual behavior towards customers experienced over an extended set of encounters. It?s hard to build and easy to lose.

Why Miley's New Image Makes Us Uncomfortable

On last night's VH1 Divas special, Miley Cyrus made an expected appearance in a very unexpected way: belting Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell" in a studded leather crop top and a bleached buzz cut. There was lots of boob and crotch grabbing, and a fair amount of growling. The crowd ate it up. But the whole spectacle left us feeling a little bit... confused.

Extreme climate predicted in Eastern U.S.: Storms, heat waves with global warming

Dec. 17, 2012 ? From extreme drought to super storms, many wonder what the future holds for the climate of the eastern United States. A study conducted by researchers at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, does away with the guessing.

Results show the region will be hotter and wetter.

Joshua Fu, a civil and environmental engineering professor, and Yang Gao, a graduate research assistant, developed precise scales of cities which act as a climate crystal ball seeing high resolution climate changes almost 50 years into the future.

The study found that heat waves will become more severe in most regions of the eastern United States and, that both the Northeast and Southeast will see a drastic increase in precipitation.

The findings are published in the Nov. 6 edition of Environmental Research Letters.

Harnessing the supercomputing power of UT's Kraken and Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL) Jaguar (now Titan, the fastest in the world), the researchers combined high-resolution topography, land use information and climate modeling. Then they used dynamical downscaling to develop their climate model results. Dynamical downscaling allowed the researchers to develop climate scales as small as four square kilometers.

"Instead of studying regions, which is not useful when examining extreme weather, dynamical downscaling allows us to study small areas such as cities with a fine resolution," said Fu, who is also a professor within the UT-ORNL Bredesen Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education (CIRE).

The researchers evaluated extreme events along with daily maximum and minimum temperatures and daily precipitation. For the 23 states east of the Mississippi River, they analyzed the present-day climate from 2001 to 2004 and predicted the future climate from 2057 to 2059. This is the first study to predict heat waves for the top 20 cities in the eastern U.S. For example, Nashville will see a temperature rise of 3.21 degrees Celsius and Memphis will see a rise of 2.18 degrees Celsius.

In comparing present climate to future, the researchers found that heat waves will become more severe throughout the eastern part of the nation. The Northeast and eastern Midwest will experience a greater increase in heat waves than the Southeast, which will almost equalize the temperatures between the future North and current South.

"Currently, the mean heat wave duration is about four days in the Northeast and eastern Midwest and five days in the Southeast," said Fu. "By the end of the 2050s, the Northeast and eastern Midwest will be gaining on the Southeast by increasing two days."

In addition, the Northeast and eastern Midwest are likely to suffer from steeper increases in the severity of heat waves.

"While the Southeast has the highest intensity in heat waves, the northeast is likely to experience the highest increase," said Fu. "We are looking at temperature increases of 3 to 5 degrees Celsius, with New York experiencing the highest hike."

Both the Northeast and Southeast will experience an increase of precipitation of 35 percent or more. Most coastal states will see the greatest increase, of about 150 millimeters a year. Taking into consideration heat waves and extreme precipitation, the Northeast shows the largest increases in precipitation. This suggests a greater risk of flooding.

"It is important that the nation take actions to mitigate the impact of climate change in the next several decades," said Fu. "These changes not only cost money -- about a billion a year in the U.S. -- but they also cost lives."

'Tis the Season?for Making Smart Choices | Lunchquest Edinburgh

It?s that time of the year again, where the holiday office parties have already started weeks ago, and you?re trying to meet up with as many people for a quick catch-up before everyone heads out for the holidays. It?s a whole month (and more) of eating, drinking, and being merry, but that doesn?t mean you have to pack on the party pounds. By following some simple tips you can survive the holiday season without ringing in the New Year with the extra weight.

Dot your plate with little bites from the buffet, like this

Curb your hunger before a party ? It might sound strange, but feeling hungry can lead you straight to the buffet table or nibbling on snacks once you get to the party. Having a small, low-fat snack such as fruit, low-fat cheese, or a low fat yoghurt before you head out the door can help control how much you eat, and will allow you to make healthier choices at the party.

Make one trip to the party buffet ? Buffet tables can be a very dangerous place when it comes to portion control. You start at the beginning of the buffet, and by the time you have made it half way, your plate is already quite full. Although everything on the buffet might be really tempting, try visiting the buffet once, choose only the foods you really want to eat, and keep portions small. You often only need a taste of the food to satisfy cravings. If you need a full plate to feel like you?re eating enough, then try filling it with salad and vegetables first before adding on the other foods. Try to move away from the buffet to avoid any unconscious nibbling while chatting away.

At the dinner table, cut your first helping in half ? Whether you?re at a friend?s house for a dinner party or with your family for Christmas dinner putting less on your plate first may help you eat less overall. If you fill your plate to begin with, often times you might be overfilling your plate out of excitement, and end up eating more than you needed. Start with half of what you would usually eat, and then if you need more, you can always have a little more.

Choose healthier finger foods ? Try to stay away from any fried appetisers, cheese cubes, cocktail sausages, and pastry based snacks. Instead, opt for some raw veggies with a small amount of dip, pretzels, or low fat crackers. If you are hosting a party, make sure you have some healthy snacks around, not only for yourself, but others might be trying to watch what they are eating too. Some ideas for snacks could be raw vegetables with a low fat dip or hummus, low fat cheese with whole wheat crackers, or some fresh or dried fruits. If you want to include some sausages, don?t wrap them in bacon, instead grill or fry them on a pan without using any type of fat.

Drink smart ? This is probably the time of year when we drink the most alcohol, but choosing the right type of drink can cut calories. Making small changes like swapping a glass of wine for a white wine spritzer with soda water or a pint of lager instead of a pint of cider can save some calories while still having a drink. Take a look at the table below to see how many calories are in some of our favourite drinks, you may be quite surprised at how quickly the calories add up.

Remember to alternate your alcoholic drink with water to help you from becoming dehydrated. If possible, get out of doing rounds, as this way you can drink at your own pace, and don?t feel the need to drink as much.

Finally, be realistic ? If you are trying to lose weight, this may not be the right time to do it. Instead, aim to maintain your weight by balancing party eating with other healthy meals. Eat small, lower-calorie and lower-fat meals during the day so you can enjoy party foods later without overdoing your total calorie intake. Most importantly, enjoy the holidays!

Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas, and a healthy start to 2013!
